Handicap Showers
Handicap showers are designed for making showering easy for disabled persons. Most handicap showers are made without an actual shower unit. A portion of the floor of the bathroom is the bottom of the shower, so there is no step up at all. Special non-slip flooring is used on the floor of the entire bathroom, and the shower drain is installed right into the floor that is slightly sloped.
Handicap showers allow for more independence and privacy when bathing, since assistance in or out is not required. Wheelchairs that are made for resisting water can be wheeled right into a handicap shower so there is no need for transfer. Or, a shower seat can be used to avoid getting the wheelchair wet.
A variety of accessories are available for handicap showers as well. Many different types of safety bars and handles can be installed in handicap showers so that there is something to hold onto.
